Christian Education

The Commission on Christian Education is charged with developing comprehensive religious education for the religious development of its entire constituency and shall make adequate provision for meeting the growing needs of religious life through worship, fellowship, study, and social action; evangelistic, missionary and recreational activity.

The work of Bridge Street’s Commission on Christian Education is organized by committee liaisons who oversee the following committees:

  • Scholarship: secure funds from donors and award the same to eligible college students.
  • Graduation: recognize graduates during the second Sunday in June.
  • Religious Education: survey the congregation annually to determine the religious education needs of congregants; develop curricula to support the religious education needs of congregants; work with Youth of the Year candidates; work with Church School to ensure appropriate days are observed on the liturgical and Christian calendar.
  • Evangelistic Outreach: organize workshops to teach congregants how to share their faith.
  • Social Action: partner with Bridge Street’s Social Action Commission to provide religious education to congregants on social issues affecting our church and community.
  • Missionary: partner with Bridge Street’s Women’s Missionary Society to provide religious education to congregants on mission and outreach.

From September through March of each year, the Commission on Christian Education offers Teaching Tuesday discipleship classes on a myriad of spiritual topics such as the faith doctrines of the church, the sacraments of Holy Communion and Baptism, liturgy and worship, the liturgical seasons, prayer, fasting, stewardship, spiritual gifts, and the Class Leader System. These classes are facilitated by lay and clergy teams.

The Commission offers a one-week Bible Institute during Christian Education Week, which is held during the last week of September. The goal of the Bible Institute is to teach members how to share their faith.
